Gray Sound Sessions, Vol. 3: Daniel Wyche
Gray Sound Sessions is pleased to present:
Daniel Wyche
Tuesday, April 28, 8pm
via the Gray Center's Facebook page.
I think the question is: what can we do with an event like this that's rooted in what we’re already doing, but that takes a single step beyond, into some of the specifics of these streaming technologies? How can we do this one step at a time? And what should be the first step? For me the very first step, which I think is by definition something I want to be very humble and simple, is—how can I play with space? With spatialization and dynamics? … I don’t want to make a request. I just want to let it happen and see how people end up experiencing it. I’m very much a “here, see what you can do with this” kind of person.

About Daniel Wyche
Daniel Wyche is a Chicago-based guitarist, composer and improviser. Working with a wide range of physical preparations, extended techniques, and pedal instruments, his solo recorded work and live performances are characterized by long-form structured improvisations. His 2016 record "Our Severed Sleep" (with Ryan Packard) was called “a blowout to wake the dead” by the Wire and the 2017 self-titled release by the trio of Wyche, Ben Baker Billington and Mark Shippy on Astral Spirits was referred to as “flat-out exhilarating improvised mania" by Marc Masters. Along with his solo and trio work, Daniel is involved in regular collaborations with Julian Lynch (Real Estate) and Ricardo Lagamosino (Many Arms, Lucy Dacus), and is highly active in the improvised and experimental communities in Chicago and beyond. Daniel’s work as curator and producer with the Elastic Arts Foundation in Chicago since 2013 has been described as “crucial” by Dusted and “vital” by the Chicago Reader. He is part-time faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and holds a PhD from the University of Chicago.

About Gray Sound Sessions
The Gray Center is now streaming a free, streaming weekly music-and-sound series, Gray Sound Sessions, featuring concerts but also happenings and experiments with form and platform. The series showcases searching performances from some of our favorite musicians and sound-makers including Opera Povera, Seth Parker Woods, a•pe•ri•od•ic, Viola Yip and Nicola Hein, and many more. In each case, we ask these artists not only to present work of their choice, but also—often through the performance itself—to reflect on the peculiar place of music and sound in this moment, and on the special power of those who labor them into being.
Gray Sound Sessions take place on Tuesday evenings at 8PM Central Daylight Time on the Gray Center’s Gray Sound Sessions page and the Gray Center's Facebook page. All events are sponsored by the Gray Center and free and open to the public, but we ask listener-watchers to consider making their own donations to the featured performers. The series is the initiative of Seth Brodsky (Gray Center Director), Zachary Cahill (Gray Center Director of Programs and Projects), and Seth Parker Woods (Artist-in-Residence at the University of Chicago). Others will surely be brought into the mix. We look forward to tuning in with you, near and far!
