WHAT IS A FERMATA?

fer·ma·ta
: a prolongation at the discretion of the performer of a musical note, chord, or rest beyond its given time value

Fermata is a musical term that denotes a pause in the counting of time, while players improvise within a framework. KAVAH’s mission emphasizes the arts as an essential human right. Together, KAVAH and Fermata guide a singular award that joins the arts’ integral place in society with the imperative that for art to be art, it needs room to play and chart its own identity.

“Process and creativity have become diminished in this culture focused on achievement and success. With this fellowship, we invite the community to stop counting time and start inquiring and creating.”

–Katrine Gray, KAVAH
