Cauleen Smith created Three Songs about Liberation as part of the exhibition “Revolution Every Day” (September 2017 - January 2018, Smart Museum of Art). Co-curated by a team including University of Chicago Associate Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, and Cinema and Media Studies, Robert Bird, the exhibition dealt with the Russian Revolution and its influence on cultural production. Cauleen and Robert's work together on the exhibition formed the basis for their 2018-19 Gray Center Fellowship Give It or Leave It. Filmed in Chicago, the film features three Black women performing historical monologues drawn from the 1973 book “Black Women in White America: A Documentary History,” edited by Gerda Lerner.
