Sankofa City Summer School

 Aug 18, 2017, 6:00 AM – 6:00 AM

What will the South Side of Chicago look like in 2021? As we anticipate the construction of the Obama Presidential Center, this workshop brings South Side residents and University of Chicago students together to visualize our desired futures for our community.

Workshop participants will produce speculative design videos exploring how rich local histories can be combined with new technologies to reimagine public spaces, and address issues of trauma, gun violence, gentrification, and police/community relations. The workshop will be led by legendary filmmaker, entrepreneur and activist Ben Caldwell (Kaos Network, Los Angeles), UChicago film scholar Jacqueline Stewart (Gray Center; Black Cinema House; South Side Home Movie Project), Karl Baumann (designer/filmmaker, USC Media Arts), François Bar (professor of Communication and Spatial Sciences, USC) and janet e. dandridge (LA-based activist, artist). Sankofa City is an ongoing, and developing project initiated by Caldwell and his collaborators in Los Angeles.
